What is this medication?

APTIVUS (Tipranavir)
Antiretroviral, Protease Inhibitor (Anti-HIV)

APTIVUS (Tipranavir) is a protease inhibitor that is used to treat adults with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). APTIVUS must always be taken with NORVIR® (Ritonavir) and with other anti-HIV medicines to treat people with HIV infection.

Clinical hepatitis and hepatic decompensation including some fatalities. Extra vigilance is warranted in patients with chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C co-infection. Fatal and non-fatal intracranial hemorrhage.

How does this medication work?

APTIVUS (Tipranavir) binds to HIV-1 protease and inhibits cleavage of viral Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors into individual functional proteins required for infectious HIV. This results in the formation of immature, noninfectious viral particles.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 500 mg twice daily.

How to Take: Swallow Tipranavir capsules whole; do not open or chew. Tipranavir must be coadministered with Ritonavir.  When using with ritonavir tablets, administer with food. When using with ritonavir capsules or solution, administer without regard to meals.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting APTIVUS (Tipranavir), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have diabetes, hemophilia A/B, hepatic impairment, are high risk for bleeding, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Tipranavir use has been associated with rare but potentially serious adverse events such as fat redistribution, hepatotoxicity, hyperlipidemia, immune reconstitution syndrome, intracranial hemorrhage, skin reactions, and sulfonamide allergy cross sensitivity.

Significant drug interactions exist, requiring dose/frequency adjustment or avoidance so avoid starting any new medications without consulting prescriber.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Prior to opening bottles of capsules, store at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). After bottle is opened, may be stored at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) for up to 60 days.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Diarrhea, nausea, pyrexia, vomiting, fatigue, headache, and abdominal pain.
