What is this medication?

ARANESP (Darbepoetin Alfa)
Hematopoietic Agent, Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agent (ESA)

ARANESP (Darbepoetin Alfa) is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) indicated for the treatment of anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and myelosuppressive chemotherapy.

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) increase the risk of death, myocardial infarction, stroke, venous thromboembolism, thrombosis of vascular access and tumor progression or recurrence. 

How does this medication work? 

ARANESP (Darbepoetin Alfa) stimulates erythropoiesis by the same mechanism as endogenous erythropoietin.

How should I take this medication? 

IV/SQ: 0.45 mcg/kg intravenously or subcutaneously weekly, or 0.75 mcg/kg intravenously or subcutaneously every 2 weeks if on dialysis. 0.45 mcg/kg intravenously or subcutaneously at 4 week intervals if not on dialysis.

How to Take: May be administered by subcutaneous or IV injection. The IV route is recommended in hemodialysis patients.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting ARANESP (Darbepoetin Alfa), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Darbepoetin Alfa has been shown to increase risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, thromboembolism and should be used with caution in patients with coexistent cardiovascular disease and stroke.   Do not use if you experience uncontrolled hypertension.  Control hypertension prior to initiating and during treatment.  Darbepoetin Alfa increases the risk of seizures in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Carefully monitor for changes in seizure frequency or premonitory symptoms.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, call your healthcare provider right away and ask what to do.

How should I store this medication?

Store refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F); do not freeze. Do not shake. Store in original carton until use to protect from light. 

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Hypertension, dyspnea, peripheral edema, cough, and procedural hypotension.
