What is this medication?

AVALIDE (Irbesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide)
Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker, Antihypertensive, Diuretic

AVALIDE (Irbesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide) is indicated for treatment of hypertension; high blood pressure.

Drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and death to the developing fetus.  Do not use in pregnant women.

How does this medication work?

AVALIDE is a combination of Irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker and Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic.  Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II.  Irbesartan also increases urinary flow rate and in addition to being natriuretic and kaliuretic, increases excretion of chloride, magnesium, uric acid, calcium, and phosphate.  Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules causing increased excretion of sodium and water as well as potassium and hydrogen ions.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 1 tablet (irbesartan 150mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg) once daily. Can increase to a maximum daily dose of irbesartan 300mg/hydrochlorothiazide 25mg once daily.

Note: Maximum antihypertensive effects are attained within 2 to 4 weeks after initiation or a change in dose; however, if necessary, may carefully titrate dose as soon as after 1 week of treatment. Dose must be individualized.

How to Take: Take without regard to meals, same time each day.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting AVALIDE (Irbesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Irbesartan has been reported to cause serious adverse effects including angioedema (rarely) and worsening renal function.  Hydrochlorothiazide can cause electrolyte abnormalities, hypotension, transient myopia and acute angle glaucoma, and photosensitivity.  AVALIDE (Irbesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide) should be used with caution in patients with aortic/mitral stenosis, diabetes, gout, hepatic and/or renal impairment, hypercalcemia, renal artery stenosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
