What is this medication?

BENLYSTA (Belimumab)
Monoclonal Antibody

BENLYSTA (Belimumab) is indicated for treatment of lupus nephritis, systemic lupus erythematosus.

How does this medication work?

BENLYSTA (Belimumab) is an IgG1-lambda monoclonal antibody that prevents the survival of B lymphocytes by blocking the binding of soluble human B lymphocyte stimulator protein (BLyS) to receptors on B lymphocytes. This reduces the activity of B-cell mediated immunity and the autoimmune response.

How should I take this medication?

Lupus nephritis
IV: Inject 10 mg/kg by intravenous infusion every 2 weeks for 3 doses, then 10 mg/kg by intravenous infusion every 4 weeks as a maintenance dose.
SubQ: Inject 400mg subcutaneously once weekly for 4 doses, following 200mg subcutaneously once weekly.

Systemic lupus erythematosus
IV: Inject 10 mg/kg by intravenous infusion every 2 weeks for 3 doses, then 10 mg/kg by intravenous infusion every 4 weeks as a maintenance dose.
SubQ: Inject 200mg subcutaneously once weekly.

How to Take:
IV: Administer intravenous infusion over 1 hour through a dedicated IV line. Do not administer as an IV push or bolus.

SubQ: Allow prefilled syringe and autoinjector to warm to room temperature for 30 minutes prior to administration.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting BENLYSTA (Belimumab), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have an active infection, an active malignancy, are immunocompromised, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Belimumab use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as hypersensitivity/infusion reactions, infections, malignancy, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, and psychiatric events.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of BENLYSTA (Belimumab), call your doctor right away. Generally, your doctor or a nurse administers this medicine by giving you an infusion into a vein, so you may be able to schedule an appointment to receive your next dose.  

How should I store this medication?

For reconstituted solution, if not used immediately, should be stored 63 protected from direct sunlight and refrigerated at 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F). Solutions of 64 BENLYSTA diluted in normal saline may be stored at 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F) or room 65 temperature.

Autoinjectors:
Store autoinjectors in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) until 30 minutes before use. Keep in the original package until time of use to protect from light. Do not shake. Do not freeze.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Diarrhea, nausea, hypersensitivity reaction, infection, psychiatric disturbance, infusion related reaction, dermatological reaction, viral gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection, leukopenia, antibody development, influenza, injection site reaction, anxiety, depression, headache, insomnia, migraine, suicidal ideation, suicidal tendencies, limb pain, bronchitis, nasopharyngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infection, fever.
