What is this medication?

CAMPRAL (Acamprosate)
GABA Agonist/Glutamate Antagonist

CAMPRAL (Acamprosate) is indicated for the treatment of alcohol use disorder.

How does this medication work? 

CAMPRAL (Acamprosate) rewires the brain to help reduce symptoms and alcohol cravings by rebalancing GABA and glutamate activity which appear to be disrupted in alcohol use disorder.  During therapeutic use, reduces alcohol intake, but does not cause a disulfiram-like reaction following alcohol ingestion.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 666mg in 3 divided doses daily; lower doses may be considered in patients weighing <60kg.  Treatment should be initiated as soon as possible following the period of alcohol withdrawal when the patient has achieved abstinence and should be continued if there is a relapse.

How to Take: Administer with a meal in 3 divided doses daily. Tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting CAMPRAL (Acamprosate), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have renal impairment, perform tasks that require mental alertness.  Acamprosate should be used with a comprehensive program to treat alcohol use disorder, and should be initiated as soon as possible following the period of alcohol withdrawal.  Acamprosate use has been associated with adverse events such as dizziness, insomnia, diarrhea, CNS depression, and suicidal ideation.

Significant drug interactions exist, requiring dose/frequency adjustment or avoidance so avoid starting any new medications without consulting prescriber.  Do not take if pregnant, unless treatment is needed for acute alcohol withdrawal or a coexisting disorder.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Diarrhea, chest pain, hypertension, palpitations, peripheral edema, syncope, insomnia, anxiety, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, skin rash, sweating, decreased libido, weight gain, nausea, xerostomia, muscle weakness, joint pain, and flu-like symptoms.
