What is this medication?

COLESTID (Colestipol)
Antilipemic Agent, Bile Acid Sequestrant

COLESTID (Colestipol) is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia.

How does this medication work?

COLESTID (Colestipol) increased fecal loss of bile acid-bound LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol by binding bile acids to form an insoluble complex that is eliminated in feces.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: For tablets, take 2-16 g/day once daily or in divided doses. For granules, take 5-30g/day once daily or in divided doses.

How to Take: Other drugs should be administered at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after Colestipol. Administer tablets 1 at a time, swallowed whole, with plenty of liquid. Do not cut, crush, or chew tablets.  If using granules, add them to ≥90 mL of any beverage (Note: mixing with carbonated beverages may lead to GI discomfort). Stir until completely mixed (granules will not dissolve in liquid). May also be mixed with milk in cereal or with soups, or added to pulpy fruits (eg, fruit cocktail, crushed pineapple, peaches, pears). After mixing and administration of granules, rinse glass with a small amount of liquid and ingest to ensure all medication is taken.

Note: Use with caution in patients susceptible to fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies. Absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K and folic acid may be decreased; patients should take vitamins ≥4 hours before colestipol. Do not administer granules in dry form (to avoid esophageal distress or accidental inhalation).

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting COLESTID (Colestipol), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have a complete biliary obstruction, are a phenylketonuric, have hypertriglyceridemia, if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Colestipol use has been associated with rare but potentially serious adverse reactions including hyperchloremic acidosis, bleeding events, constipation, and hypothyroidism.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
