What is this medication?

COMPLERA (Emtricitabine/Rilpivirine/Tenofovir)
Nucleoside analog HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor

COMPLERA, a combination of two nucleoside analog HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) and one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (rilpivirine) is indicated for use as a complete regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 infection as initial therapy in those with no antiretroviral treatment history and with HIV-1 RNA less than or equal to 100,000 copies/mL at the start of therapy, or (2) or to replace a stable antiretroviral regimen in those who are virologically suppressed (HIV-1 RNA <50 copies/mL).

How does this medication work?

COMPLERA, a combination of two nucleoside analog HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) and one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (rilpivirine).
Emtricitabine is a synthetic nucleoside analog of cytidine that inhibits the activity of the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase resulting in chain termination.  Rilpivirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor of HIV-1 and inhibits HIV-1 replication by non-competitive inhibition of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase.  Tenofovir inhibits the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with the natural substrate deoxyadenosine 5′-triphosphate and, after incorporation into DNA, by DNA chain termination.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take one tablet once daily.

How to Take: Take with food.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting COMPLERA (Emtricitabine/Rilpivirine/Tenofovir)  make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. COMPLERA has been reported to cause severe skin and hypersensitivity reactions, including cases of Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS). COMPLERA can cause hepatotoxicity and monitor liver enzymes before and during treatment.  COMPLERA can cause acute renal failure and should not be administered concurrently with nephrotoxic drugs.  Consider monitoring bone mineral density in patients with a history of pathologic fracture or other risk factors of osteoporosis or bone loss. Concomitant use of COMPLERA with drugs with a known risk to prolong the QTc interval of the electrocardiogram may increase the risk of Torsade de Pointes.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
