What is this medication?

CYCLOMEN (Danazol)
Androgen

CYCLOMEN (Danazol) is indicated for treatment of endometriosis, hereditary angioedema prophylaxis.

ALERT: WARNING
Thromboembolic Events:
Thromboembolism, thrombotic and thrombophlebitic events, including sagittal sinus thrombosis and life-threatening or fatal strokes have been reported.

Pregnancy:
Use of Danazol in pregnancy is contraindicated. An additional form of contraception such as a barrier non-hormonal method should be used in all women capable of becoming pregnant during therapy.  Additionally, a nonhormonal method of contraception should be used during therapy.  Exposure to Danazol in utero may result in androgenic effects on the female fetus; reports of clitoral hypertrophy, labial fusion, urogenital sinus defect, vaginal atresia, and ambiguous genitalia have been received.

Hepatic effects:
Peliosis hepatis and benign hepatic adenoma have been observed with long-term use of Danazol. 

Intracranial hypertension:
Danazol has been associated with several cases of benign intracranial hypertension also known as pseudotumor cerebri. Early signs and symptoms of benign intracranial hypertension include papilledema, headache, nausea and vomiting, and visual disturbances.

How does this medication work? 

CYCLOMEN (Danazol) suppresses pituitary output of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), resulting in regression and atrophy of normal and ectopic endometrial tissue; decreases rate of growth of abnormal breast tissue; reduces attacks associated with hereditary angioedema by increasing levels of C4 component of complement.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 200mg to 800mg daily.

How to Take: Initiate therapy during menstruation or ensure patient is not pregnant while on therapy.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting CYCLOMEN (Danazol), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Danazol may cause non-reversible androgen side effects, hepatotoxicity, intracranial hypertension and thromboembolic events.  Danazol should be used with caution in patients who may have cyclic breast pain, diabetes, edematous conditions (i.e. cardiovascular disease, migraine, seizure disorder, renal impairment) and porphyria.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Urticaria, pruritus, rashes, acne, hyperpigmentation, hair loss, inflammatory erythematous nodules, altered skin pigmentation, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, nausea, vomiting, constipation, gastroenteritis, hematuria, prolonged post-therapy amenorrhea, disturbance of the menstrual cycle, muscle cramps or spasms, joint pain, back pain, hypertension, palpitation, tachycardia, thrombotic events.
