What is this medication?

DYMISTA (Azelastine Hydrochloride/Fluticasone Propionate)
Corticosteroid, Antihistamine

DYMISTA (Azelastine Hydrochloride/Fluticasone Propionate) is indicated for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

How does this medication work?

DYMISTA (Azelastine Hydrochloride/Fluticasone Propionate) is a nasal spray that combines Azelastine, an antihistamine and fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid.  Azelastine acts on the immediate allergic phase reducing allergic rhinitis symptoms such as a runny nose and nasal itchiness. Azelastine blocks histamine H1 receptor sites on effector cells and subsequently inhibits the release of histamine and other mediators involved in the allergic response. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that acts as a potent vasoconstrictor and anti-inflammatory.

How should I take this medication?

Nasal: Use 1 spray in each nostril twice daily.

How to Use:  Prime the nasal spray prior for first use by pressing the pump 6 times.  If ≥14 days have elapsed since last use, then reprime pump with 1 spray or until a fine mist appears. Shake bottle gently before using. Blow nose to clear nostrils. Keep head tilted downward when spraying. Insert applicator tip 1/4 to 1/2 inch into nostril, keeping bottle upright, and close off the other nostril. Breathe in through nose. While inhaling, press pump to release spray. After each use, wipe the spray tip with a clean tissue or cloth and replace cap. Clean spray pump unit and dust cap at least 1 time each week in warm water and allow to completely dry before placing back on bottle. Avoid spraying directly into nasal septum, eyes or mouth.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting DYMISTA (Azelastine Hydrochloride/Fluticasone Propionate), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Fluticasone propionate may cause hypercortisolism or suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, particularly in children or when used over a prolonged period of time.  Prolonged use of fluticasone propionate can also increase the incidence of secondary infection, mask acute infection and/or prolong or exacerbate an existing infection.  Avoid using in patients with nasal septal ulcers, nasal surgery or nasal trauma until complete healing has occurred.

DYMISTA (Azelastine Hydrochloride/Fluticasone Propionate) should be used with caution in patients with ocular herpes simplex, latent tuberculosis, untreated infections (viral, fungal, bacterial, parasitic) and ocular diseases such as glaucoma and/or cataracts.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule the next day. Don’t add an extra dose to make up the one you missed.

How should I store this medication?

Store in an upright position at room temperature. Do not freeze or refrigerate. Throw away the medicine after you have used 120 sprays, even if there is still medicine left in the bottle.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Headache, dysgeusia, epistaxis.
