What is this medication?

Erythromycin (Ophthalmic)
Antibiotic, Ophthalmic

Erythromycin is indicated for the treatment of ocular infections, ophthalmia neonatorum.

How does this medication work? 

Erythromycin is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics. Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment works by stopping the growth of bacteria in the eye.

How should I take this medication? 

Ophthalmic:  Apply a 1 cm ribbon of ointment into affected eye(s) up to 6 times daily, depending on the severity of the infection.

How to Take: Avoid contact of the tip of the ophthalmic ointment tube with the affected eye.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before using an erythromycin ophthalmic ointment make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, pre-existing medical conditions and activities you perform.  Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment may avoid contamination.  Do not touch tip of applicator or let the tip of applicator touch eye.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Hypersensitivity, minor ocular irritation, redness.
