What is this medication?

KYTRIL (Granisetron)
Antiemetic; Selective 5-HT3 Receptor Antagonist

Granisetron is indicated for chemotherapy-associated nausea and vomiting; radiation-associated nausea and vomiting.

How does this medication work? 

KYTRIL (Granisetron) is a selective 5-HT3-receptor antagonist that blocks serotonin, both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 2 mg once daily up to 1 hour before chemotherapy/radiation or 1 mg twice daily; the first 1 mg dose should be given up to 1 hour before chemotherapy (with the second 1 mg dose 12 hours later). 

How to Take: Oral doses should be given up to 1 hour prior to initiation of chemotherapy/radiation.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting KYTRIL (Granisetron), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have long QT syndrome, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Granisetron use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as ECG alterations, severe constipation leading to bowel distention/fecal impaction, hypersensitivity reactions, injection site reactions, and serotonin syndrome.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache, asthenia.
