What is this medication?

Analgesic, Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID)

Indicated for acute pain, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis, tendonitis, acute flares of gout, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Serious cardiovascular thrombotic events:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use.

Indomethacin is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation:
NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at greater risk for serious GI events.

How should I take this medication?

Oral (Immediate release [excluding Tivorbex]): Take 25 mg 2 to 3 times daily; if well tolerated, increase daily dosage by 25 or 50 mg at weekly intervals until satisfactory response or a total daily dose of 150 to 200 mg/day (maximum dose: 200 mg/day) is reached.

Oral (extended-release capsules): Initial: Take 75 mg once daily, may increase to 75 mg twice daily (maximum dose: 150 mg/day).

How to Take: Take with food, immediately after a meal to decrease GI adverse effects.  The extended-release capsules must be swallowed whole; not crushed, chewed, or split.
