What is this medication?

INTELENCE (Etravirine)
Antiretroviral, Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (Anti-HIV)

INTELENCE (Etravirine) is a human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) indicated for treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-experienced patients 6 years of age and older with viral strains resistant to an NNRTI and other antiretroviral agents.

How does this medication work?

INTELENCE (Etravirine) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) which blocks RNA- and DNA-dependent polymerases preventing HIV-infected cells from replicating.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 200mg twice daily.

How to Take: Take after a meal.  Swallow the tablet whole, do not break, crush, or chew. If you are unable to swallow the tablet whole, you may disperse tablets in water (5 mL [at least enough to cover tablets]); stir well (until water looks milky), then add ~15 mL of water, milk, or orange juice, and drink immediately. Tablets should not be placed in orange juice or milk without first adding water. Rinse glass several times (with water, milk or orange juice) and swallow entire contents to ensure administration of dose. Do not use carbonated beverages or warm (>40°C) water.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting INTELENCE (Etravirine) make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Etravirine has been associated with a number of adverse effects including accumulation and redistribution of fat, development of immune reconstitution syndrome, and skin hypersensitivity reactions.  Severe and potentially life-threatening rashes have been reported with Etravirine most commonly in the first 6 weeks of therapy.  Immediately stop taking Etravirine and contact a physician if you develop a rash associated with any of the following symptoms as it may be a sign of a more serious reaction such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis or severe hypersensitivity: fever, generally ill feeling, extreme tiredness, muscle or joint aches, blisters, oral lesions, eye inflammation, facial swelling, swelling of the eyes, lips, mouth, breathing difficulty, and/or signs and symptoms of liver problems (e.g., yellowing of your skin or whites of your eyes, dark or tea colored urine, pale colored stools/bowel movements, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or pain, aching or sensitivity on your right side below your ribs).

What if I miss a dose?

If a dose is missed within 6 hours of the time it is usually taken, take the dose following a meal as soon as possible, and then take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time. If a dose is missed by more than 6 hours from the time it is usually taken, do not take the missed dose and simply resume the usual dosing schedule.
