What is this medication?

LATISSE/LIMIGAN RC/VISTITAN (Bimatoprost)
Antiglaucoma, Prostaglandin Analogue

Brand Name US: Latisse
Canadian Equivalent: Lumigan

Bimatoprost (Ophthalmic) is officially indicated for elevated intraocular pressure and hypotrichosis of the eyelashes depending on the formulation used.

How does this medication work?

LATISSE/LIMIGAN RC/VISTITAN (Bimatoprost) is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin with ocular hypotensive activity and decreases intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor.  Bimatoprost may increase the percent and duration of hairs in the growth phase, resulting in eyelash growth.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Risk of bacterial keratitis if multiple ophthalmic solutions are used.

Use with caution in patients with limited corneal endothelial cell reserve, risk factors for macular edema.

May permanently change the color of the iris, eyelid, periorbital tissue, and eyelashes.

How should I take this medication?

Solution (Lumigan; Vistitan)
Ophthalmic: Instill 1 drop into affected eye(s) once daily in the evening; do not exceed once-daily dosing (may decrease IOP-lowering effect).  If used with other topical ophthalmic agents, separate administration by at least 5 minutes.

Hypotrichosis of the Eyelashes - Latisse
Ophthalmic: Place one drop on applicator and apply evenly along the skin of the upper eyelid at base of eyelashes once daily at bedtime; repeat procedure for second eye (use a clean applicator).

How to Take: When instill/inserting solutions and/or implants into the eye make sure to do so under sterile conditions. Keep your body including your head in an upright position for ≥1 hour after administration.  Make sure to remove make-up and contact lenses prior to instill solution to the eye and/or eyelashes.  When using Latisse, use the sterile applicator provided only; do not use other brushes or applicators. Use a tissue or cloth to blot any excess solution on the outside of the upper eyelid margin; do not apply to lower eyelash line. Do not reuse applicators; use new applicator for second eye. Applying more than once nightly will not increase eyelash growth; eyelash growth is expected to return to baseline when therapy is discontinued.  May reinsert contacts 15 minutes after application.  When using Lumigan; Vistitan, wait at least 5 minutes between drops of using multiple combination of glaucoma eye medications.  Also make sure to remove your contact eye lenses prior to administration and wait 15 minutes before reinserting.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 2 to 25° C (36 to 77° F).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Increased growth in number of eyelashes, conjunctival hyperemia, eye pruritus.

Note this is not a complete list of side effects for LATISSE/LIMIGAN RC/VISTITAN (Bimatoprost), only common ones.
