What is this medication?

Ranibizumab, Lucentis (US/CDN)
Ophthalmic Agent, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Inhibitor, Monoclonal Antibody

Indicated for treatment of diabetic macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular edema, myopic choroidal neovascularization.

How does this medication work?

Ranibizumab, Lucentis is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody fragment which binds to and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) suppressing abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye that can cause vision loss.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Intravitreal): 0.3 to 0.5mg once a month (approximately every 28 days).

How to Take (Intravitreal): Each vial or prefilled syringe should only be used for the treatment of a single eye. If the contralateral eye requires treatment, a new vial or prefilled syringe should be used and the sterile field, syringe, gloves, drapes, eyelid speculum, filter, and injection needles should be changed before ranibizumab is administered to the other eye.  Adequate anesthesia and a topical broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent should be administered prior to the procedure.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Ranibizumab, Lucentis make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and any existing medical conditions.  Intravitreous injections can cause endophthalmitis and retinal detachments, increased intraocular pressure, and thromboembolic events.

What if I miss a dose?

Talk to your doctor about scheduling another appointment if you miss a treatment of Lucentis. You need to get one injection per month. After the first four injections, you may begin getting treatments every three months. Your doctor will determine the treatment schedule that is right for you.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children. Store in the refrigerator at 2º-8ºC (36º-46ºF). DO NOT FREEZE. Do not use beyond the date stamped on the label. Protect prefilled syringes and vials from light and store in the original carton until time of use. Do not open prefilled syringe sealed tray until time of use.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Arterial thromboembolism, foreign body sensation of the eye, headache, anemia, joint pain, eye pain and inflammation, blurred vision and elevated intraocular pressure.

Note this is not a complete list of side effects, only the most common.
