What is this medication?

MIDAMOR (Amiloride)
Antihypertensive, Diuretic, Potassium Sparing

MIDAMOR (Amiloride) is indicated for treatment of heart failure, and hypertension.

ALERT: WARNING
Like other potassium-conserving agents, amiloride may cause hyperkalemia (serum potassium levels greater than 5.5 mEq per liter) which, if uncorrected, is potentially fatal.

How does this medication work? 

MIDAMOR (Amiloride) blocks sodium channels in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) of the nephron which inhibits sodium reabsorption.  This leads to potassium retention, decrease in calcium, magnesium and hydrogen excretion.  The natriuretic, diuretic and antihypertensive effects of MIDAMOR (Amiloride) is independent of aldosterone.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 5mg to 10mg daily.

How to Take:  Take with food to reduce GI irritation.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting MIDAMOR (Amiloride), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  The usage of MIDAMOR (Amiloride) can cause electrolyte disturbances (i.e. decrease in sodium and chloride, increase in BUN) and significant hyperkalemia.  It is very important that your doctor monitor electrolytes routinely when on MIDAMOR (Amiloride).

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Dizziness, fatigue, headache, hyperkalemia, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, vomiting, nausea, impotence, muscle cramps, cough, dyspnea.
