What is this medication?

Analgesic, Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

RELAFEN/RELAFEN DS (Nabumetone) is indicated for management of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis.

FDA has issued a warning on the use of NSAIDs from 20 weeks gestation or later in pregnancy can lead to fetal renal dysfunction leading to oligohydramnios, neonatal renal impairment which may be fatal.  NSAIDs cause an increased risk of cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal. Nabumetone, Relafen/Relafen DS is contraindicated in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.  NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events such as bleeding, ulceration and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal.

How does this medication work?

RELAFEN/RELAFEN DS (Nabumetone) is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling by blocking the effect of natural substances called cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 1000mg as a single dose; adjust dose based on clinical response up to a maximum of 2000mg daily in 1 to 2 divided doses.

How to Take:  Take with food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting RELAFEN/RELAFEN DS (Nabumetone), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Nabumetone like other NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke.  Nabumetone can cause drug reactions characterized with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms.  Nabumetone does increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal conditions such an ulceration, bleeding and perforation. Nabumetone has also been associated with decreased platelet adhesion and aggregation, hyperkalemia, photosensitivity, hepatic effects and potentially serious skin reactions including exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN); may occur without warning. Nabumetone should be used with caution in patients with asthma, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, hepatic and/or renal impairment.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, increased liver enzymes, edema, diaphoresis, pruritus, skin rash, constipation, flatulence, gastritis, nausea, occult blood in stools, stomatitis, vomiting, xerostomia, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, insomnia, nervousness, tinnitus.
