What is this medication?

Alogliptin, Nesina
Antidiabetic Agent, Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 (DPP-4) Inhibitor

Alogliptin, Nesina is indicated for management of Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2.

How does this medication work?

Alogliptin, Nesina is a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that results an increase in incretin levels.  Incretin hormones (eg, glucagon-like peptide-1 [GLP-1] and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide [GIP]) regulate glucose homeostasis by increasing insulin synthesis and release from pancreatic beta cells and decreasing glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells. Decreased glucagon secretion results in decreased hepatic glucose production.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 25mg daily.

How to Take: Can take with or without food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Alogliptin, Nesina make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Alogliptin, Nesina have been shown to cause disabling arthralgia, bullous pemphigoid, hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis.   Alogliptin, Nesina should be used with caution in patients with heart failure, renal and hepatic impairment because of the risk to worsening their pre-existing condition.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Headache, renal function abnormality, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection.
