How does this medication work?

Ritonavir, Norvir is a protease inhibitor that inhibits cleavage of viral Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors into individual functional proteins required for infectious HIV. This results in the formation of immature, non-infectious viral particles.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Oral): 100mg to 400mg daily in 1 to 2 divided doses. 

How to Take: Take with food. Swallow whole, do not break, crush, or chew.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Ritonavir, Norvir make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Ritonavir, Norvir has been associated with a number of adverse effects including altered cardiac conduction such as prolongation of the PR interval, AV block, accumulation of fat, development of immune reconstitution syndrome, and elevated cholesterol levels.  Ritonavir, Norvir should be used with caution in patients that have an underlying structural heart disease, ischemic heart disease or cardiomyopathies, hepatic disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, and hemophilia A or B.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Pruritus, skin rash, flushing, hypercholesterolemia, increased gamma-glutamyl transferase, increased serum triglycerides, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysgeusia, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, feeling hot, paresthesia, arthralgia, back pain, increased creatine phosphokinase in blood specimen, cough, oropharyngeal pain
