What is this medication?

ELOXATIN (Oxaliplatin)
Platinum-based antineoplastic

ELOXATIN (Oxaliplatin) is a platinum-based drug used in combination with infusional fluorouracil and leucovorin, which is indicated for adjuvant treatment of stage III colon cancer in patients who have undergone complete resection of the primary tumor and   treatment of advanced colorectal cancer.

Serious and fatal hypersensitivity adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur with Oxaliplatin within minutes of administration and during any cycle.

How does this medication work?

ELOXATIN (Oxaliplatin) undergoes non enzymatic conversion and forms platinum-DNA crosslinks.  These crosslinks inhibit DNA replication and transcription.

How should I take this medication?

IV: Administer 85 mg/m2 as an intravenous infusion over 120 minutes concurrently with leucovorin over 120 minutes in separate bags, followed by fluorouracil on Day 1 of each 14-day cycle. Administer fluorouracil and leucovorin on Day 2 as recommended. Continue treatment for up to 12 cycles or unacceptable toxicity.

How to Take: Administer Oxaliplatin as IV infusion over 2 hours; extend infusion time to 6 hours for acute toxicities.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting ELOXATIN (Oxaliplatin) make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Oxaliplatin is associated with a number of adverse effects such as peripheral neuropathy, severe myelosuppression, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), pulmonary toxicity, hepatotoxicity, QT prolongation and bleeding.  Delay Oxaliplatin until neutrophils are greater than or equal to 1.5 × 109 /L and platelets are greater than or equal to 75 × 109 /L. Withhold ELOXATIN for sepsis or septic shock. Never use Oxaliplatin in patients who develop PRES.  Monitor liver function tests at baseline, before each subsequent cycle, and as clinically indicated. Monitor electrocardiograms in patients with congestive heart failure, bradyarrhythmias, and electrolyte abnormalities, and in patients taking drugs known to prolong the QT interval. Correct electrolyte abnormalities prior to initiating Oxaliplatin and periodically during treatment.

What if I miss a dose?

It is important for you to keep all of your medical appointments. Call your doctor if you miss an appointment. There may be special instructions for you.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Peripheral sensory neuropathy, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, nausea, increase in transaminases and alkaline phosphatase, diarrhea, emesis, fatigue, and stomatitis.
