What is this medication?

DAYPRO (Oxaprozin)
Analgesic, NonopioidNonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID), Oral

Oxaprozin is indicated for management of osteoarthritis; rheumatoid arthritis.

Cardiovascular thrombotic events:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use.

Oxaprozin is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation:
NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events, including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at a greater risk for serious GI events.

How does this medication work?

Oxaprozin reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and 2) enzymes, which results in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors.  It has antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 600-1800mg daily in divided doses

How to Take: May be administered without regard to food; administer with food to decrease GI distress 

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Oxaprozin make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have asthma, past bariatric surgery, previous coronary artery bypass graft surgery, hepatic impairment, hypertension, renal impairment, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Oxaprozin use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as anaphylaxis, cardiovascular events, CNS depression, gastrointestinal inflammation/ulcer, hematologic effects, hyperkalemia, photosensitivity reactions, and skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Edema, confusion, depression, disturbed sleep, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, sedation, pruritus, skin rash, abdominal distress, abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, gastrointestinal perforation (with gross bleeding), gastrointestinal ulcer, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, dysuria, urinary frequency, anemia, prolonged bleeding time, increased liver enzymes, tinnitus, renal insufficiency
