What is this medication?

PENTASA (Mesalamine)
5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivative

Officially indicated for the treatment and maintenance of ulcerative Colitis (moderate) and Crohn disease (mild to moderate).

How does this medication work? 

Mesalamine is a 5-aminosalicylic acid derivative that is a controlled release form of Mesalamine and has been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties.  The exact mechanism of action is unknown; but it is thought to modulate local inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes and tumor necrosis factor.

How should I take this medication? 

Ulcerative Colitis (Treatment, Maintenance of Remission)
Oral: Take 500mg 4 times daily; may increase the dose to 1000mg 4 times daily if needed for 6 to 8 weeks.

Crohn Disease (mild to moderate) Treatment
Oral: Take 1000mg 4 times daily.

Crohn Disease (mild to moderate) Maintenance of Remission
Oral: Take 1000mg 3 times daily.

How to Take Mesalamine PENTASA (Mesalamine): Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush or chew it.  If the patient is unable to swallow the capsule, you can open the contents of the capsule and sprinkle the controlled release beds on yogurt of applesauce.  It is best taken with a meal.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Use with caution in patients with pericarditis and myocarditis 

Discontinue use in patients who experience hypersensitivity reactions which may include hepatitis, myocarditis, pericarditis, nephritis, hematologic abnormalities and/or pneumonitis.

May cause photosensitivity, renal and hepatic impairment

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

The extent of side effects attributed to mesalamine are dependent on the dosage form, dose, and patient type:


Central Nervous System: Headache (3% to 14%)

Gastrointestinal: Eructation (≤26%), abdominal pain (oral: 2% to 21%, children & adolescents: 10%; rectal: 5%), constipation (≤11%)

Respiratory: Nasopharyngitis (children and adolescents: 15%; adults: 1% to 4%)
