How does this medication work?

Eltrombopag, Promacta/Revolade is a thrombopoietin (TPO) nonpeptide receptor agonist that increases the production of blood cells such as platelets by binding to and activating the human TPO receptor. The activation of the TPO receptor induces proliferation and differentiation of marrow progenitor cells.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: 25mg to 150mg once daily depending upon indication for use.

Note: Do not use eltrombopag to normalize platelet counts.

How to Take: Take on an empty stomach.  Do not crush, chew, or split the tablets; only swallow the tablets whole.  Take Eltrombopag, Promacta/Revolade at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids, foods high in calcium (i.e. dairy products, calcium-fortified juices, certain fruits, certain vegetables), or supplements containing polyvalent cations (i.e. iron, calcium, aluminum, magnesium, selenium, zinc). Do not administer more than one dose within 24 hours.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Eltrombopag, Promacta/Revolade make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take.  Monitor for visual disturbances and have a regular ophthalmic examination prior and during therapy to check for signs of cataracts.  There is also a risk of hepatoxicity and thromboembolism while on Eltrombopag, Promacta/Revolade.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Elevated liver enzymes, upper respiratory tract infections, skin rash, alopecia, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, toothache, vomiting, urinary tract infection, muscle and joint pain, cough, fever.
