What is this medication?

Ranitidine, Zantac
Antacid, Histamine H2 Receptor Antagonist

Ranitidine/Zantac is indicated for duodenal/gastric ulcer, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or heart burn. (may also be used for conditions not listed)

How does this medication work? 

Ranitidine/Zantac inhibits the H2 histamine receptor in stomach parietal cells which inhibits gastric acid secretion, gastric volume reduction, and raises pH level.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 75-300mg once or twice daily

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Ranitidine/Zantac make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have liver disease, kidney disease, porphyria, gastric malignancy or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Long term use may result in B12 deficiency due to poor absorption. Some rare cases of reversible confusion have been reported in the elderly, severely ill, and those with liver or kidney impairment.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Side effects are uncommon with this medication however some that may occur are headache, diarrhea, and constipation.
