What is this medication?

SPRYCEL (Dasatinib)
Antineoplastic Agent, BCR-ABL Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor

SPRYCEL (Dasatinib) is a kinase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase. SPRYCEL is also indicated for treatment of chronic, accelerated, or myeloid or lymphoid blast phase Ph+ CML with resistance or intolerance to prior therapy including imatinib.  SPRYCEL is indicated for the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) with resistance or intolerance to prior therapy.

How does this medication work?

SPRYCEL (Dasatinib) is a BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets most imatinib-resistant BCR-ABL mutations (except the T315I and F317V mutants) by distinctly binding to active and inactive ABL-kinase. Kinase inhibition halts proliferation of leukemia cells.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 140mg once daily.

How to Take: Take once daily with or without food.  Swallow whole; do not break, cut, crush, or chew tablets. Take with a meal if GI upset occurs.  Do not administer proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers concomitantly with SPRYCEL (Dasatinib).

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting SPRYCEL (Dasatinib) make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Dasatinib can cause severe myelosuppression resulting in thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and anemia.  Monitoring complete blood count on a regular basis is required.  Thrombocytopenia can lead to severe hemorrhage and needs to be closely monitored.  Dasatinib is associated with fluid retention, sometimes severe, including ascites, edema, and pleural and pericardial effusions. Use Dasatinib with caution in patients who have or may develop prolongation of the QT interval. Watch for signs and symptoms of heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction and myocardial infarction.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
