What is this medication?

Timolol (Ophthalmic), Timoptic/Betimol/Istalol
Ophthalmic Beta Blocker; Nonselective

Timolol (Ophthalmic), Timoptic/Betimol/Istalol is officially indicated to treat elevated intraocular pressure secondary to open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.  It is sometimes prescribed off-label as part of an emergency 4 drug regimen in acute angle-closure glaucoma if and ophthalmologist can not be seen for at least one hour.

How does this medication work?

Timolol reduces intraocular pressure by reducing aqueous humor production and possibly increasing its outflow via blocking both beta1– and beta2-adrenergic receptors.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Timolol (Ophthalmic), Timoptic/Betimol/Istalol make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, myasthenia gravis, cerebrovascular disease, a thyroid disorder, if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

How should I take this medication?

Instill one drop into affected eye(s) once or twice daily depending on the formulation or the severity of the condition.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, use consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.  Invert and shake gel formulations once before use and apply light pressure to lacrimal sac (inside corner of eye near nose) for 60 seconds after application to prevent drainage of the drop from eye.  Regular solution drops do not need to be shaken.

You Need to Avoid: Remove contact lenses before applying and wait at least 15 minutes after administration before reinserting.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and keep it out of the reach of children. Discard any solution remaining in the dropper bottle one month after the date on which the container is first opened.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Burning sensation or stinging of the eyes are the most common side effects.  Many betablocker side effects are listed on official product monographs however their rates are undefined and likely infrequent due to minimal systemic absorption.
