What is this medication?

Dorzolamide (Ophthalmic), Trusopt
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor; Ophthalmic Agent, Antiglaucoma

Indicated for treatment of glaucoma.

How does this medication work?

Reversible inhibition of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase II and IV in the ciliary epithelium resulting in reduction of hydrogen ion secretion at renal tubule and an increased renal excretion of sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, and water to decrease production of aqueous humor to reduce intraocular pressure.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Ophthalmic): Instill 1 drop in the affected eyes 3 times daily.

How to Take Dorzolamide, Trusopt:  If using additional topical ophthalmic preparations, separate administration by at least 5 minutes. Remove contact lens prior to administration and wait 15 minutes before reinserting. Instruct patients to avoid allowing the tip of the dispensing container to contact the eye or surrounding structures. Ocular solutions can become contaminated by common bacteria known to cause ocular infections. Serious damage to the eye and subsequent loss of vision may occur from using contaminated solutions.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Dorzolamide, Trusopt, make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Dorzolamide, Trusopt has been associated with bacterial keratitis, ocular effects including conjunctivitis, systemic adverse effects including blood dyscrasias, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fulminant hepatic necrosis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, blood dyscrasias. Dorzolamide, Trusopt should be used with caution in patients with risk of corneal edema, hepatic impairment and/or renal impairment.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature (15 °C–30 °C) protected from light, heat, and moisture.

Do not leave the top/lid off the bottle for any length of time to avoid contaminating the eye drops.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Skin rash, bitter taste, nausea, urolithiasis, local ocular hypersensitivity reaction, fatigue, headache, burning sensation of eyes, eye discomfort, stinging of eyes, superficial punctate keratitis
