Antiviral Agent

Valganciclovir, Valcyte is officially indicated for use in cytomegalovirus prophylaxis (solid organ transplant recipients); CMV retinitis treatment (AIDS-related)

“ALERT: US Boxed Warning

Hematologic toxicity:
Severe leukopenia, neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, and bone marrow failure including aplastic anemia have been reported in patients treated with valganciclovir.

Impairment of fertility:
Based on animal data and limited human data, valganciclovir may cause temporary or permanent inhibition of spermatogenesis in males and suppression of fertility in females.

Fetal toxicity:
Based on animal data, valganciclovir has the potential to cause birth defects in humans.

Mutagenesis and carcinogenesis:
Based on animal data, valganciclovir has the potential to cause cancers in humans.”

How does this medication work? 

Valganciclovir, Valcyte Valganciclovir is rapidly converted to ganciclovir in the body.  Ganciclovir is phosphorylated to a competitive inhibitor of DNA polymerase resulting in inhibition of viral DNA synthesis.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 900mg once or twice daily

How to Take: Valganciclovir should be administered with meals. Should be taken with meals.

You Need to Avoid: Do not break or crush tablets.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Valganciclovir, Valcyte make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have renal impairment, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Valganciclovir, Valcyte use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as acute renal failure, blood dyscrasias, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Hypertension, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, graft rejection, tremor, retinal detachment, increased serum creatinine, fever
