What is this medication?

XTANDI (Enzalutamide)
Antineoplastic Agent, Antiandrogen

XTANDI (Enzalutamide) is indicated for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) in patients who are chemotherapy-naïve with asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic disease after failure of androgen deprivation therapy.

How does this medication work?

XTANDI (Enzalutamide) is an androgen receptor inhibitor that inhibits androgen binding, AR nuclear translocation, and AR-mediated transcription leading to cellular apoptosis and decreased prostate tumor volume. Unlike other antiandrogen therapies, it has no known agonistic properties.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 160 mg (four 40 mg capsules) as a single oral daily dose.

How to Take: Take with or without food. Co-administration of XTANDI (Enzalutamide) with CYP2C8 inhibitors may increase the plasma exposure of enzalutamide and should be avoided if possible. In patients who must be co-administered a strong CYP2C8 inhibitor, reduce the dose to 80 mg once daily.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting XTANDI (Enzalutamide) make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Enzalutamide use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased risk of bone fracture, hypersensitivity reactions, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, and seizures.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take XTANDI (Enzalutamide) at the usual time, take your usual dose as soon as you remember.  If you forget to take enzalutamide for the whole day, take your usual dose the following day.  If you forget to take enzalutamide for more than one day, talk to your doctor without delay. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you forgot.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Peripheral edema, hypertension, fatigue, increase risk of falls, dizziness, headache, hyperglycemia, hot flashes, hypermagnesemia, hyponatremia, weight loss, constipation, diarrhea, decreased appetite, nausea, decreased neutrophils/total white blood cell count, asthenia (weakness), back pain, arthralgia, musculoskeletal pain, dyspnea (difficulty breathing), increased risk of upper respiratory infections.
