What is this medication?

Metolazone, Zaroxolyn
Diuretic, Thiazide-Related

How does this medication work? 

Metolazone, Zaroxolyn inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules causing increased excretion of sodium, potassium, hydrogen, and water.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Oral): 5 to 20 mg once daily.

How to Take:  Administer as a single daily dose with or without food. Therapy should be taken early in the day to avoid nocturia. May require potassium supplementation

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Metolazone, Zaroxolyn make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have adrenal insufficiency, have had bariatric surgery, if have diabetes, gout, hepatic impairment, hypokalemia, renal impairment, systemic lupus erythematosus, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Metolazone, Zaroxolyn use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as electrolyte disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, orthostatic hypotension, photosensitivity, azotemia, and oliguria.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Chest discomfort, chest pain, necrotizing angiitis, orthostatic hypotension, palpitations, syncope, venous thrombosis, chills, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, neuropathy, paresthesia, restlessness, vertigo, pruritus, skin necrosis, skin photosensitivity, skin rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, urticaria, glycosuria, gout, hypercalcemia, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, hypochloremia, hypochloremic alkalosis, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hyponatremia, hypophosphatemia, hypovolemia, abdominal pain, anorexia, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, epigastric distress, nausea, pancreatitis, vomiting, xerostomia, impotence, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, hemoconcentration, hypoplastic anemia, leukopenia, petechia, purpura, thrombocytopenia, cholestatic jaundice, hepatitis, arthralgia, muscle cramps, muscle spasm, weakness, transient blurred vision, increased blood urea nitrogen
