What is this medication?

ZEJULA (Niraparib)
Poly ADP-Ribose Polymerase Inhibitor (PARP)

ZEJULA (Niraparib) is a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor indicated for treatment of  advanced epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer who are in a complete or partial response to first-line platinum-based chemotherapy.  Niraparib is indicated for the treatment of recurrent epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer who are in a complete or partial response to platinum-based chemotherapy. Niraparib is indicated for the treatment of advanced ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer who have been treated with three or more prior chemotherapy regimens and whose cancer is associated with homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) positive status defined by either a deleterious or suspected deleterious BRCA mutation, or genomic instability and who have progressed more than six months after response to the last platinum-based chemotherapy.

How does this medication work? 

ZEJULA (Niraparib) is an inhibitor of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) enzymes, PARP-1 and PARP-2 as well as increased formation of PARP-DNA complexes through “trapping” the PARP enzyme on damaged DNA.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 200mg to 300mg once daily.

How to Take: Take with or without food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting ZEJULA (Niraparib), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia (MDS/AML) which can cause fatality has been associated with Niraparib.  Monitor patients for hematological toxicity and discontinue if MDS/AML is confirmed.  Niraparib can cause hypertension; monitor blood pressure and heart rate at least weekly for the first two months, then monthly for the first year, and periodically thereafter during treatment with Niraparib.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Nausea, thrombocytopenia, anemia, fatigue, constipation, musculoskeletal pain, abdominal pain, vomiting, neutropenia, decreased appetite, leukopenia, insomnia, headache, dyspnea, rash, diarrhea, hypertension, cough, dizziness, acute kidney injury, urinary tract infection, and hypomagnesemia.
