What is this medication?

ZIAGEN (Abacavir)
Antiretroviral, Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor, Anti-HIV

ZIAGEN (Abacavir) is indicated in antiretroviral combination therapy for the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.

How does this medication work?

ZIAGEN (Abacavir) is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor and interferes with RNA- and DNA-dependent polymerase resulting in inhibition of viral replication.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 300mg twice daily or 600mg once daily in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

How to Take: Take with or without regard to food.

Note: Abacavir, in combination with lamivudine and either efavirenz, raltegravir, boosted atazanavir, or boosted darunavir, should not be used in patients with pretreatment HIV RNA ≥100,000 copies/mL.

ZIAGEN is contraindicated in patients with a prior hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir and in HLA-B*5701-positive patients.
You should be screened for the HLA-B*5701 allele prior to initiating therapy with ZIAGEN.

Discontinue ZIAGEN (Abacavir) immediately if a hypersensitivity reaction is suspected, regardless of HLA-B*5701 status.
Following a hypersensitivity reaction to ZIAGEN, never restart ZIAGEN or any other abacavir-containing product because more severe symptoms, including death can occur within hours.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting ZIAGEN (Abacavir), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Abacavir has been associated with serious life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions in patients who carry the HLA-B*5701 allele, immune reconstitution syndrome, lactic acidosis and hepatomegaly.  Abacavir should be used with caution in patients with risk for coronary heart disease and hepatic impairment.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take your medication, take it as soon as you remember. Then continue as before. Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses. If you stop therapy with ZIAGEN because of side effects or illness, check with your doctor before restarting therapy to make sure that symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction have not been missed.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
