What is this medication?

Gatifloxacin, Zymar/Zymaxid
Ophthalmic Antibiotic, Fluoroquinolone

Gatifloxacin/Zymar/Zymaxid is indicated for bacterial conjunctivitis, bacterial keratitis (off-label) (may be used for conditions not listed)

How does this medication work?

Gatifloxacin/Zymar/Zymaxid inhibits DNA gyrase in bacteria which is important in protein synthesis.  Blocking DNA gyrase results inhibits relaxation of supercoiled DNA so it cannot be used for protein synthesis and promotes the breakage of double stranded DNA eventually causing cell death.  Humans do not have DNA gyrase which makes it an ideal target for antibiotics.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Gatifloxacin/Zymar/Zymaxid make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

How should I take this medication?

Apply to affected eye(s) every 2-6 hours depending on dosage form and severity of condition (8 drops in each eye per day maximum)

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, use consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.  Apply light pressure to lacrimal sac (inside corner of eye near nose) for 60 seconds after application to prevent drainage of the drop from eye.

You Need to Avoid: Do not wear contact lenses during therapy, do not touch tip of applicator to any surfaces or to the eye itself to avoid contamination

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?
